So wow, that was a fun game. I think there were at least 15 times where I was saying to myself, “This is where we find out if they are the same team as last year or not”….
So to start I will give out a few game balls, the first one goes to Trent Edwards. He proved to me and prolly all of Buffalo that he is ready to be a starting QB in this league. That game winning drive was amazing. The pass to Evans was a thing of beauty; it was a slow developing play and he just waited and waited until the exact moment that he needed to throw it. Great touch on the pass to Hardy, putting it where no one could get it. Also on the drive at the end of the game to set up the field goal, he wisely just laid down for a sack instead of throwing the ball away.
The other game balls go to Freddie Jackson and Ashton Youboty. Jackson had a great game catching the ball out of the backfield, and looked very shifty outside. He set up the first touchdown run by perfectly executing a screen pass and ensuring that they kept the drive alive. He was able to spell Marshawn enough so that they both kept grinding out the yards at the end. Youboty was about the only guy out there that seemed to be able to tackle someone 1 on 1. His corner blitz on the first drive of the game for the Jags almost resulted in a fumble, and he made a few nice tackles in the open field, while playing good coverage as well.
So to the game itself, could the Bills have looked any better on that first drive? They just came out firing and Edwards kept making the smart throws and kept the drive alive. The defense came out and showed the same intensity as last week, but both offensively and defensively they seemed to ease up for some reason, maybe the heat. Terrence McGee made another huge play before half picking off what could have been a tying touchdown pass for the Jags. So the first half had the Bills up 10-3 and looking solid.
The second half the Bills started on defense and couldnt stop the Jags on a huge 4th and 1 inside of Jags territory. If the Bills had lost I would have looked at that play as one of the main reason behind it, either that or the other 4th down conversion that the Jags got on us. The Jags score to tie it up and then their special teams comes through with a perfectly executed onside kick. The Bills defense held strong forcing a field goal and the Bills finally got the ball back. About this point, I am getting scared because the Bills are looking way too conservative and the Jags defense has their ears pinned back, and it finally came back to bite the Bills and their all-pro LT Jason Peters in the butt. Peters got beat clean off the edge and Edwards ended up fumbling the ball away allowing the Jags to get another field goal to put them up 16-10.
The whole day, I am waiting for the one true deep pass that I just knew was coming, and when it came it changed the whole face of the game. 3rd and 6 and Edwards makes a great read and just places the ball perfectly to Evans. And then the Bills go aggressive and aim for the big tall receiver they drafted and he makes a great catch, making sure to get both feet in bounds. The next drive for the Jags was an interesting one because for some reason, they completely got away from the running game which was starting to work for them. Roscoe gets a nice punt return and we seal the game with a huge kick by Lindell.
So all in all, these are the types of games that we have been losing year after year for lord knows how many years. Good to see the Bills show some spunk and come out of top for once.
