Crowell Out for the season…

The Bills suffered another blow to their promising season yesterday when they placed linebacker Angelo Crowell on the IR. From all the reports surfacing, it appears that this is a very interesting situation. I guess Crowell decided now was the best time to have minor knee surgery which would keep him out for 4-6 weeks. Also, from what I gather, the Bills front office was not the least bit thrilled to hear this and questioned why he wouldn’t have done this early in the off-season.
Now what I have to ask is this. If he was going to be out only 4-6 weeks, and was penciled in as one of your starting linebackers who, by the way, just happened to lead the team in tackles last year, why wouldn’t you just wait it out playing one roster spot short?
Well this really could be one of those “cut off your nose to spite your face situations” where the Bills thought he was being selfish and decided they were done with him.
Regardless, Keith Ellison will be filling in for him and while it is a step down in terms of talent, Ellison did have a good season last year and I am confident he can repeat that performance this year.
So onto my other passion, the NY Mets start a HUGE HUGE HUGE series this weekend vs. the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Mets currently hold a 3 game lead in the division and are hoping to avoid last years devastating collapse. Now I might sound biased because I love the Mets, but I just can’t see them allowing a collapse like last year to happen again, and here is why…..
- They have a true ace pitcher this year in Johan Santana whose main job is to make sure that he either keeps the winning streaks going, or stops losing streaks from getting too long. I know that sounds simple but last year we put our “ace” on the mound in the last game of the year needing a win and he got shelled.
- The Mets are currently playing with 3 players who could be potential MVP candidates this year. While I don’t think any of the 3 are currently the favorite to win the award, they’re having great seasons and turning it on when it counts (Carlos Delgado) couldn’t hurt.
- This team under interim manager Jerry Manuel is playing with so much more heart then last year. Last week in the first game of an 8 game road trip, they go out and blow a 7-0 lead against the Phillies to lose 1st place in the division. So what do they do……go out and win 6 of 7 on the rest of the trip. Now I can’t prove this, but if Willie Randolph were still manager, I just don’t see us recovering from a seemingly devastating loss like that.
So I could go on for hours about why I think the Mets will win the division, but I have to save some things for my next post so until then…
